Every spring, University of New Mexico students, faculty, and staff band together for a day full of community service, creating a “storm” of Lobos who work to help nonprofits all over town. This annual event offers a fun way of giving back to Albuquerque through a massive volunteer force. The day starts at UNM Johnson Center with a breakfast then everyone heads out to projects across Albuquerque.
This year, the UNM Student Health Leadership Council had a very rewarding opportunity to work at Storehouse New Mexico, the state’s largest food pantry, and we appreciated the help.
Upon arrival, the UNM team was given a tour of the well-organized facility before being put to work. Students and advisors sorted through baked goods and organized them for display. They also moved and stocked bags of split peas so they would be ready for giving to families in need. The group also sanitized and cleaned the food pantry in preparation for the next day’s operations.
Ignacio Cordova, president of the UNM Student Health Leadership Council said, “I would just like to say thank you for the opportunity to give back to our community. It is crucial that we help each other out in times of need. We are all in this together, whether it be a single mom trying to feed her children or a broke college student just trying to make his or her way. Volunteering at the Storehouse helped us all realize that. Once again, thank you for the wonderful experience.”
Summer is a great time for students to volunteer at the Storehouse. They have more free time and the Storehouse has more need for volunteers than any other time of the year. During summer more people come in for food and the pantry traditionally has fewer volunteers, so we need more volunteers in the summer. The Storehouse works with groups or individual volunteer, including youth. Students 14 and up can come independently. Children 8 years to 13 must come with a parent, teacher, scout leader or other responsible adult. If you have a group of 5 or more people, please call (505) 842-6491 or email Info@StorehouseNM.org to let us know that you will be joining us.
